How to Prepare when a Tornado Strikes

rules to survive on an island

Plan ahead for tornadoes. It's a smart idea to consult your building's emergency plan to ensure you're safe. In case of a tornado, everyone should know where they are, even children. If possible, have a plan for how everyone will meet up after the disaster is over. For advice, make sure you call your family. Don't panic, and stay calm.

Make a plan.

Whenever a tornado strikes, the best thing to do is prepare yourself. Make sure you know where to shelter. If you are driving outside, try to get out of the way, cover your head with your arms, and get as low as possible. Avoid using your car to escape the tornado. Instead, take refuge in a safe place. You should also alert your relatives and neighbors.

Do not get in a ditch.

Many chasers choose their vehicle to ride out tornadoes. But why would you want to do that? Tornadoes are violent and can wreak havoc on vehicles, even when they're stationary. You have probably seen images of trucks and cars wrapped in trees and covered with lethal debris. A vehicle provides you with a layer that protects you better than other vehicles.

Avoid getting caught in a drainage ditch or canal.

If possible, seek shelter in a sturdy construction. If this is impossible, lay flat on the ground. Avoid bridges, overpasses, and other structures. Stay indoors when there is a tornado warning. Don't open your windows, as they won't protect you from the debris. In an emergency, it is important to keep your entire family together while you wait for help.

Protect yourself from falling objects

First, seek shelter in a sturdy place if a tornado threatens. After you have been inside, lay flat on the ground. Cover your head and arms with your arms. Move to a lower place, such as a basement or storage space. If you are trapped in a mall or large store, find an interior room with no windows or doors. Keep calm once you are inside.

Get shelter in a home

If a tornado is moving through an area it's crucial to find somewhere safe to hide. You should seek shelter within a sturdy building, if possible. Avoid staying on the lowest floors of a building as elevators may not work and heavy items could fall through. Bathrooms, in addition to being safe havens for people inside buildings, are also a good option. Keep your home safe from tornadoes.

Avoid hiding under bridges and overpasses

Avoid hiding under bridges and on roads that have been crossed by tornadoes. Although it may seem tempting to climb onto a bridge to escape the rain, tornadoes can easily penetrate clothing, skin and eyes. An individual who climbs overpasses is at risk of being thrown half an mile in the air. A narrow passage underneath an overpass can increase wind speeds, causing serious injuries or even death.

Avoid being stuck under a bridge or an overpass during a tornado

Meteorologists warn against huddling under a bridge or overpass during threatening weather conditions. Overpasses create wind tunnels that increase tornado winds, launching deadly missiles. Oklahoma's May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak was a great example of how dangerous and unsafe it is not to get cover under an umbrella. The force of tornadic winds can pelt those huddling underneath with flying debris. They can blow them out of shelters, even causing death.

FAQ

What is the difference between a folding knife and a fixed-blade knife?

Folding knives can be folded compactly so they fit in a backpack or pocket. The blade folds away when not in use.

Fixed-bladed knives are designed to remain fixed during normal use. They are usually longer than folding knives.

Fixed-blade knives have a greater durability, but are also more portable.

Why are knot-tying skills so vital for survival?

Everywhere you look, people use knots to connect items like fishing lines, ropes, ladders, and so on. They are also useful for tying bags shut and securing objects to trees. When you are required to tie yourself to a tree, rope, or secure your shelter, the ability to make knots can be a lifesaver.

What should you do first in a survival situation

In an emergency situation, you must assess the situation first. You must know what's happening, where you are, how you got there.

It is also important to understand what you can expect from the environment. For example, if you're in the middle of nowhere, you may not be able to use any form of communication.

You don't need to know everything if you don’t have any knowledge.

If you are in imminent danger, you should seek help right away. If you're safe, you may want to spend some time gathering information and trying to figure out what has happened.
