No matter if you are bushwalking and camping, there is a chance that you will find yourself in an emergency situation. Fortunately, there are a few basic principles of wilderness survival that will help you stay alive.

To remain positive and calm is the first. This is a huge step forward in survival.

Basic Principles

No matter if you are an experienced adventurer, or someone who simply enjoys camping and hiking, it is important to understand the basics of wilderness survival. These simple steps could save your life in emergency situations.

To stay alive, you need to maintain a positive mental attitude. You can also increase your chances of survival by having a positive outlook and not giving up.

Shelter

Shelter is a fundamental human need. It can be constructed from leaves, branches, and other naturally occurring materials, or it could be man-made such as a cave.

When you are in an emergency situation you must seek shelter. Shelter can be found at many locations, including trees and caves, abandoned buildings, and subway stations.

Water

Water is an essential part of the life on Earth. It exists in all three phases, liquid, gas, and connects the major components of our environment: air, clouds, oceans lakes, oceans, vegetation and snowpack.

Water is also a solvent that dissolves many substances. It helps cells transport and use oxygen and other nutrients.

Food

Food is a vital part of survival. To ensure its safety, food should be kept in an airtight container for long periods. It is crucial to ensure your body receives all the nutrients it needs for health and strength.

There are many food options that can be stored to keep you alive during an emergency. These foods include cookies, crackers, energy bars, frozen food, dehydrated and freeze-dried food, fresh meats, fresh grains, and canned goods.

Compass

It doesn't matter if you are in the woods, or on a boat; knowing how to use both a compass (and a map) is essential for survival. A compass uses the Earth's magnetic poles while a map shows where landmarks are located.

The compass points north because the needle aligns with the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field. However, it does not point to the geographical North Pole (also called the true North) as the Earth's magnet field is not a straight line.

Fire

Fire is a chemical reaction that releases heat and light, marking the meeting of a combustible material with oxygen. These flames can be used to heat water, cook and lighten the room.

While fire can be a hazardous and complicated chemical process, its role is important in nature. Fires can create habitat patches which allow plants and animals to thrive.

First Aid

If someone is in an accident or has an illness, having a basic knowledge about first aid can mean the difference of life and death. It can save lives until paramedics arrive, or until they are admitted to the hospital.

The first thing to do when helping someone is to keep calm and assess the situation. Once stabilized, the first aider must start administering first aid by checking the airway and breathing.

Fear

Survival depends on how well a person can handle fear. Your brain is your most valuable resource. It's important to be mentally strong in emergency situations.

Our sympathetic nervous system, which is part of our autonomic nerve system, triggers a biochemical response that prepares us to fight or flight when we sense a threat. This triggers the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

What is the best survival tool if you are lost?

The compass shows us the direction north. It also shows us the distance we have traveled since our origin point. If you're traveling somewhere with mountains, the compass may not always show you where you need to go. However, if you're in a flat area, the compass should be able to show you the way.

If you don't have a compass, you could use an object such as a rock or tree for reference. Although you would still need to locate a landmark to guide yourself, at least you would know where north is.

How to Navigate With or Without a Compass?

While a compass won't show you where you are, it will help you locate your way home if you lose track of your direction.

There are three methods you can use to navigate.

  1. By landmarks
  2. Use a compass to find magnetic North
  3. By stars

These are objects you recognize immediately when you come across them. They can include buildings, trees, rivers, and others. Because they give you a visual clue about where you are, landmarks are very useful.

Magnetic North simply means the direction where the Earth’s magnetic field points. The sun appears to be moving across sky if you look up. However, the earth’s magnetic field actually causes it to move around the Earth. So, while the sun seems to move across the sky, it really moves around the horizon. At noon the sun is directly overhead. At midnight, the sun will be directly below you. The magnetic field of the earth is constantly changing. This means that the exact direction and orientation of the North pole magnetically changes each day. This means that sometimes you may be off course for quite a while.

Stars are another method for navigating. Stars appear over the horizon to rise and lower. These are fixed points in space that you can use to determine your location relative to other locations.

How do you choose the best knife to suit your needs?

It can be difficult to find the right knife for your needs. There are so many companies that claim to have the best knives.

But which one is the best? How can you choose between them?

You must first consider the tasks that you intend to do with your knife.

Do you plan to cut wood, skin or chop animals, or slice bread?

Is the knife meant for hunting or fishing? Is it designed for camp cooking or kitchen knife cutting?

Are you going to use it to open bottles or cans? Do you plan to open boxes or packages?

Does your knife have to be strong enough?

What about cleaning it after every use? Is it something you intend to do often?

Does it need to retain its edge well over time.

What is your best survival tip for the future?

It is essential to be calm in order to survive. You will fail, make mistakes, and eventually die if you panic.
