Preparing for the City

land navigation course california

Preparing for a city trip is very similar to preparing for a country trip. It involves stockpiling food and supplies, securing your home, and arming yourself for self-defense. Prepping for the city comes with its own challenges. It's often crowded with people, and it is filled with crime, making it difficult to prepare for emergency situations. Here are some tips to help prepare for the unexpected.

Natural disasters

There are many ways you can prepare for disasters in your community. Preparation can save lives whether you are facing natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or other natural hazards. While every disaster requires a different approach to prepare, there are some basics that all residents should remember. First, if you are in an earthquake-prone zone, get all your fragile items down and secure them. Second, know your emergency numbers and program them into your phone. A third step is to designate a meeting spot for your family in case of an emergency.

Political or economic conflicts

A civil war can lead to violent conflict, especially if the government is involved. During the Syrian Civil War the rebels seized state property and the government was forced almost two hundred more to purchase supplies for the areas under the control the opposition. This kind of conflict can cause economic ruin. While political conflict isn't necessarily an immediate threat, you should prepare yourself in case of an economic or political conflict.

Space shortage

While it is possible for people to survive with very little space, it can sometimes be difficult to store all of the essentials in a small space. In fact, 55% live in large urban areas. This makes harvesting seasonal food more difficult and allows people to reserve large rooms for cooking. Space is becoming more scarce in urban areas due to rising real estate prices, which has made it even more expensive for most people.

Inadequacy of knowledge

Unpreparedness for disasters is the number one excuse for poor knowledge in prepping. Although this is an extremely unlikely scenario, the thought of having no knowledge at all is a common one among some preppers. Others are motivated to rebuild the world and be ready for any major disaster. Regardless of their motivations, they don't have all the information necessary to make it happen safely.

Inadequacy of community

Preppers are often thought to be the most prepared Americans. This phenomenon is more diverse than originally believed. According to Dr. Bradley Garrett from the University College Dublin there are actually more than 20,000,000 preppers in the world. These individuals have become increasingly interested in self-sufficient living skills, including water purification, medical care, powering electrical devices without grid access, and business opportunities. Recently, he visited South Dakota, Thailand, and South Dakota to meet with the Vivos xPoint, an abandoned military facility that calls itself the largest survivalist community on the planet.
